Cultural projects at vacant urban spaces have the potential to be key factors of heritage preservation and an essential part of spatial urban transformation processes towards the development of new life and diversity. However, cultural operators, administrations and initiatives have to consider precarious effects like gentrification, fertilization and creative placemaking without a social conscience. Being beware of these challenges is the first step towards future-oriented cultural heritage revitalization. But how to find the equilibrium of economic, environmental, social, historical and cultural dimensions of revalorization projects with the sustainable city in mind?

The Forget Heritage project started on June 1, 2016, and is funded by the INTERREG Central Europe Program, which will run for three years. The goal is to foster collaboration between ten partners from seven Central European countries to jointly develop innovative, reproducible and sustainable historical terrain management models. The settlement of creative and cultural enterprises should cause an appreciation of the listed areas.
Many cities are characterized by unused historic buildings that once shaped the history of the local population. Well, in a state of neglect, their historical heritage is forgotten and the transformation into “urban brownfields” negatively affects the surrounding areas. “New ideas need old buildings” (Jane Jacobs): The challenge for the project partners is to work together to find an innovative and sustainable solution to protect, enhance and enhance the economic value of Central Europe’s cultural heritage. Another goal of the partnership is to make recommendations to other cities that will enhance the hidden potential of cultural heritage. The creation of new jobs and the extension of leadership skills should also contribute to improving the quality of life of citizens and operators of cultural and creative industries.
So far, Forget Heritage has included a transnational training model for the management of historic sites, civic participation guidelines, a management handbook, and a guide to regulatory frameworks. These results will serve as upgrade reference works and source of information for structured conceptual planning, training, and implementation. They provide orientation for municipal leaders and at the same time practical guidelines for civic initiatives.
With the project, the partners also commit themselves to practically testing the developed solutions. In Nuremberg, this happens with the revival of the Z-Bau Nordgarten. Since June 1, 2018, it has been developed into an open meeting place – with low-threshold horticultural offers and as a place of opportunity, in which various actors from the creative industries and from the citizens are depicted. The aim is to create a place where experimental formats in the fields of the environment, socio-cultural and urban development can emerge.
